Promote Double High-level Plan with International Visions – Beijing Polytechnic Competency-based Training Class

Beijing Polytechnic is a public higher vocational college. In 2007 the college was selected in the list of “National Model Higher Vocational College”, in the Plan of Beijing Characteristic High-level Vocational College Construction in 2018, was chosen to be a member of “National High-level School Construction College (one of ten in Grade A) in 2019. Moreover in 2022, taking the opportunity of the 14th Five-Year Plan, Beijing Polytechnic and Australia Vocational Education Alliance (AVEA) jointly held an International Competency-based Training Course that started from 10th of July to the 25th in order to promote the construction of “Double High-level Plan” for the college and international development, as well as continuously improve the professionalism and comprehensive quality.

1. Training Course

Australian competency-based training is different from the traditional model of education that is based on how much time students spend on studying to earn credits. To be an outstanding competency-based teacher, one needs to manage and motivate students to prove them with skills, competency and knowledge. In addition, Australian vocational education emphasizes employment-oriented studying, which means graduates are capable of working directly – “employed upon graduated”. All these features are inseparable from Australian competency-based training and assessment. Therefore, Beijing Polytechnic decided to bring in Australian competency-based training course that contains 5 themes: VET introduction, competency-based training, training strategies, competency-based assessment, competency-based training and assessment in practice.

2. Training Goals

The goal of this course is to implement the spirit of “National Vocational Education Reform Plan” that is expanding the international perspective of core teachers in vocational education, and thus promoting the construction of Double High-level Plan and internationalization of vocational colleges. The course focuses on enhancing the curriculum design, teaching method, evaluation and so on. It helps teachers in the improvement of concept and understanding of international vocational education, in the management of the competency-based training and the teaching skills, in the seeking of the teaching and assessment method, also in the adaption of the trend that more international cooperation and demand will be addressed.

3. Trainer

Malcolm Heighway is an experienced advanced trainer. He has nearly 40 years of experience working and teaching in a variety of industry sectors in Australian vocational education, including competency-based training, leadership and management, work health and safety, international business, risk management, horticulture and irrigation, and quality auditing etc. He was involved in the revision of the Australian Horticultural Irrigation Training Package and was responsible for the quality audit of Australian vocational colleges. He has represented the Victorian government in international education cooperation and exchange in India, and has also made several trips to China for vocational education training, including certificate Ⅳ in training and assessment, work health and safety, leadership and management, risk management, horticulture and so on.

4. Training Model and Features:

(1) Training resources covers videos, textbooks, reading materials, practice, assignment and exams in the AVEA Platform that are beneficial for candidates to review. (2) Multiple learning methods include blended learning, live zoom training, on-line studying, discussion, Q&A. (3) We also provide training and tracking service. Interpreter works though the training and training assistant also helps to manage and review with the candidates. Feedback is available on a 3-month and 6-month time.

Conclusion

Double High-level Plan has opened a new page for the development of vocational education in China. The core and essence of Double High Plan lies in the promotion of the vocational education with high quality. Internationalization is an important element for higher vocational schools, and is also the part of Double High-level Plan. AVEA has been actively building international cooperation platforms for vocational institutions, widening international development paths, establishing international standard systems, training teachers with international methodology, and enhancing the openness of talent training, so as to promote the international exchanges and cooperation of vocational colleges to a new level.
